Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Spain's Jon Rahm has appealed fines handed down by the DP World Tour in a move that could make him eligible to participate on Team Europe in next year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
Rahm was fined for participating in LIV events this year held concurrently with European tour events. By making his appeal, he is eligible to play in European tour events until the matter is resolved and has entered the Sept. 26-29 Spanish Open.
If Rahm can play in four DP World Tour events by the end of 2024, it would make him eligible for the Ryder Cup.
So far this year, Rahm has played in 12 LIV events and three major tournaments and represented Spain at the Paris Olympics. His participation at the Olympics counts as one European tour event.
"I'm entered into the tournament; we entered a long time ago," Rahm said this week about the Spanish Open. "Whether they let me play or not is a different thing. I'm not a big fan of the fines. I think I've been outspoken about that. I don't intend to pay the fines, and we keep trying to have a discussion with them about how we can make this happen."
Rahm said he also is entered in the Dunhill Links Championship and the Andalucia Masters before the end of the year. Getting cleared to play in those events remains to be seen. He also has the option of paying the fines in order to become eligible again.
"Jon Rahm has a pending appeal against sanctions imposed on him and in accordance with the DP World Tour's regulations, he is eligible to participate in the Open de Espana presented later this month," a spokesperson for the DP World Tour said, according to Sky Sports.
The 2025 Ryder Cup is set to take place more than one year from now, from Sept. 26-28, 2025.
